A New Integrated Database Model for the 
Design and Construction Information of Building Structures

Engineering database (EDB) is a major component in computer-integrated construction (CIC) system, which takes the responsible for the data flow and sharing between engineers, teams, and offices. It should be able to represent and manipulate all the engineering information systematically.  Recently, object-oriented modeling is considered as the best solution in the modeling of building engineering. However, object-oriented database (OODB) technology has not been to put to practical use yet. This computing environment produces the inconsistency between modeling and database implementation. In the current computing environment, the use of relational database (RDB) technology is the feasible and practical alternative.

The main objective of this paper is to describe a new database model for the representation of the design and construction information of buildings, which supports object-oriented modeling concept in the RDB framework. The model shall be called MLG model that stands for Master object (MO), Local object (LO), and Global object (GO) respectively. Using MLG model, a design component object, such as a column or a frame, is represented by three basic object mentioned above according to the domain scope. The MO describes the information within the object domain. The LO does locally within the parent object domain and GO does globally within the entire building domain. For example, the section data of the C1 column is managed in a column MO, the location data of the C1 column in a floor object (parent object) is managed in a column LO, and the column force data is managed in a column GO. 

Three basic tables represent a design component in the database implemented using MLG model. The basic tables are master table, local instance table, and global instance table. Additional tables can be integrated and related to the basic ones for various kinds of information such as construction planning and cost estimation. A database for the RC buildings has been designed and implemented using MLG database model. It contains not only the structural design information but also the information of construction planning and cost estimation.
