Design for Construction framework
The Design for Construction framework is developed within CRUX
project "Design for Construction" of STAR
research program "System engineering in construction" at VTT Building Technology
STAR project CRUX deals with the problem of constructability.
It focuses particularly on how the product - building and building
products - contributes to the ease of construction and the project
is aiming at developing tools and methods to improve the product
in respect of the constructability.
Construction process is typically fragmented; it is difficult
to consider in the design phase all the requirements set by different
phases of the product realisation process and by later phases
of the life cycle of the building. Thus systematic means for information
feedback through the whole construction process is needed in order
to anticipate requirements in the later phases of the process.
Manufacturing industries have developed systematic methods to
evaluate manufacturability and assemblability (DFM and DFA). Still
these are mainly intended to be used with small products which
are manufactured in large batches. There are not means for systematic
diagnostics of assemblability and constructability of large one-of-a-kind
products, such as a building.
Design for Construction -framework. This is a description of the
process how to adopt production requirements into the product
in the design phase. Furthermore required methods and tools needed
in different phases of the process are identified and selected
tools will be developed. The process is generic and it is applicable
to manage also other requirements than those of production (i.e.,
One of the above mentioned methods is a method to identify the
factors impacting constructability. Method covers all the components
of constructability, i.e., manufacturing, assembly, transportation
There are two distinct dimensions in the design for construction
framework. The first deals with product development and the other
deals with project specific design. They are both applying continuous
improvement and team work. In project specific design the concept
which best fits the project is selected and adapted into the project.
In product development concepts for different purposes are developed
and improved based on the feedback from the realised projects.
Design for Construction framework will be exploited to build company
specific databases for constructability information. Quality information
which helps in getting the construction process right at the first
time will be collected.
Impact on process lead time
Design for Construction framework is directly contributing to
construction lead time. First it supports the construction project
team to design the building according to the goals that the project
has. Secondly it will help to develop products suitable for rapid
