Design for Construction (CRUX)

Introduction

Separated design and production is characteristic for construction industry. This has been the main reason that the needs of construction are poorly considered in design phase. Communication between design and production is not adequate to carry these needs in every unique project into the drawings. Design personnel do not know well enough the relationship between a design solution and time & cost. Building is complicated product with numerous interrelationships that are not known. This makes the problem extremely difficult. At present no tools exist that could be exploited to manage the dependencies.

Objective

The research problem is to create a method to adopt construction's needs into the product. The method should apply continuously in every phase of the project. Two approaches will be studied in the project:

Results

Project will result in DFC system framework that consists of set of tool prototypes and their interaction. System framework will address the tools that are needed in different phases of construction project and that are used from different viewpoint (prefabrication/ manufacturing, construction, assembly on site, etc.).

DFC tools will be evaluated with real data. Evaluation will result in ideas what should a new generation building look like to satisfy both user and construction requirements.

Industrial benefits

DFC system framework will be the seed to create knowledge on constructability. DFC system framework will help to collect and process the constructability data. It will support continuous improvement and organisational learning.

Industry will develop tools and complete DFC -systems for their own needs. These systems will help industry to reduce time & cost and improve quality.
